What could our customers’ roofs power? Let’s Go!

In the last edition of “what could our customers’ roofs power”, we found out that in just one year, our customers could power a whole lot of entertainment. From concerts and Disneyland to movies and baseball games, our homeowners are out there creating a lot of solar energy!

That’s because just last year, we installed 94,959 kilowatts of power! This means in 2020, Sunpro Solar (now ADT Solar) was named the second largest residential solar contractor in the entire nation according to Solar Power World.

And since 2008, we’ve installed more than 190 total megawatts of solar energy to more than 30,000 satisfied customers!

And in the last 3 years, we’ve had a revenue growth of 1,164%, landing us on INC 500’s list of the nation’s fastest-growing private companies.

But just how much electricity is 94,959 kilowatts? It’s hard to imagine how much that is until we break it down in a way we can comprehend.

That’s why in this edition, we find out just how much power our homeowners produce by transforming kilowatts into travels. We know you’ve been excited to get out and see the world, so let’s see how much your roof can power you through your adventures.

Drive coast to coast in an EV 100 times!

With the amount of power our homeowners produce, you could easily drive an electric vehicle coast to coast a hundred times! That’s over 300,000 miles!

And by the way, did you know that switching to solar power for your home is saving the world from harmful pollutants in all kinds of ways?

In fact, over the lifetime of our customer’s solar panels, it will be the equivalent of removing over 185,106 metric tons of CO2 pollutants from the air, or removing 46,250 cars from the road each year!

According to EPA, a typical passenger vehicle emits about 4.6 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year and every gallon of gasoline burned creates about 8,887 grams of CO2.

Power 30,000 electric scooters!

In just one year, our customers could charge over 30,000 electric scooters!

To put this in perspective, around 2,000 to 5,000 scooters are currently allowed in each major city. That’s like powering 6 major cities’ entire population of electric scooters!

By the way, did you know that solar powered scooters are a thing? They are not quite the choice over EV scooters, but they we’ll see more and more of them in future if we’re lucky!

Keep a hotel on for decades!

Our customers are so powerful, they could keep a hotel on and in business for over 23 years!

In the U.S., hotels and motels use an average of 14 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity and 49 cubic feet of natural gas per square foot (ft2) each year. So for a typical hotel, that means our customers could power it for years and years, in the power they produce for just one year!

Make over 7,000 trips on an electric train!

You know, that old algebra problem of how much electricity does a 100 passenger train running at a speed of 350 km/h consume? Relax, we already crunched the numbers for you! The answer is, we can power a one-hundred passenger train for around 7,369 trips when that train is running at a speed of 350 km/h (assuming an average trip is a kilometer, but you get the idea). Whatever way you put it, that’s a lot of energy!

Fun fact, an electric train of this size consumes 13.57 kWh in comparison to a diesel train which consumes over over 560 kWh. Switching to electric cars is the way to go, and now China is leading the way with its latest high-speed electric train that only consumes 3.8 kWh!

Circumnavigate the earth in an electric powered boat!

In case you wanted to circumnavigate the earth in an electric powered boat, we’ve got you covered!

An all-electric boat consumes around 3000 kWh every 1,000 miles. Which means you could sail roughly 25,000 miles (depending on the boat and speed) with all the power our homeowners create in one year. It’s only 24,900 miles around the entire world!

Fly 248,000 miles in a small airplane!

We’ve got travel by sea, but what about by air? By air in a small electric airplane, we could power 248,000 miles!

And speaking of air travel, we could also power an average airport for a year! An average airport uses 19.7 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity and 34.7 thousand Btu of natural gas per square foot annually, with lighting and cooling accounting for 46% of overall energy use.

Fun fact about solar energy and airports: the world’s first solar-powered airport is the Cochin International Airport in India.

According to BBC: “Huge power bills prompted the airport to build the 12 megawatt solar plant which has more than 46,000 solar panels.

Viva Las Vegas’ Energy Bill

The Las Vegas Strip uses a whopping 8000 megawatts of energy each day. In fact, one major hotel typically sees an electricity bill of $100,000 each month! Which is probably why some of them are finally turning to alternative energy solutions like solar. In 2021, MGM Resorts launched a new 100-megawatt (MW) solar array capable of offering up to 90% of daytime power to the company’s 13 resorts scattered across the Las Vegas Strip.

The Big Apple Uses a Big Bite of Electricity

Times Square in NYC is known for its extravagant display of giant LED displays, so it’s not surprising that it takes about 161 megawatts a day to keep it bright. That’s a massive electricity bill for just a few blocks.

Powering the City of Lights

Paris is known as the City of Lights and is home to powering the Eiffel Tower, about a thousand feet tall building that is lit up 24/7 for tourists to enjoy. It is powered by 20,000 light bulbs, using around 22 megawatts per day. The great thing to know about the Eiffel Tower’s energy is that in 2015 it went green by adding wind turbines 400 feet above ground to power the commercial areas of the tower’s first floor. These turbines produce 10,000 kilowatts hours of electricity per year. The Eiffel Tower also got an energy upgrade of solar panels and LED lights to help reduce its carbon footprint as well as its electricity bill.
