If you’re still considering whether solar energy is a good investment for your home, here are some of the best reasons to go solar in Connecticut.

#1. Rising electricity prices

Let’s talk about Connecticut electricity prices. We know you understand, every time you open one of those bills. The average cost of an electricity bill in Connecticut is around $140, which is higher than most other states, as of 2020. That’s almost double that of several other states, making Connecticut’s utility costs some of the highest in the entire nation. In fact, only Hawaii and Alaska electricity prices are higher. And don’t think you’ll be safe from burdensome bills in the future, the odds of prices continuing to rise are pretty high. The predicted percentage for 2022 was 21%!

If that sounds scary, it might be time to consider what renewable energy has to offer. Imagine this: your home could be powered during the day by solar energy instead of your utility company’s ugly fossil fuel energy. And at night, the solar energy you stored throughout the day can power your home, and even through blackouts. In addition, the clean energy your solar panels produce will likely become more valuable to your budget over time.

#2. Connecticut Solar Incentives

Connecticut has fantastic solar incentives that can make the investment of going solar worthwhile for your home. Take advantage of tax exemptions, the 26% federal tax credit, and net metering: a program that allows you to sell back your unused energy to the utility company. Make the utility company your customer and reduce your monthly electricity bill. Find out more about Connecticut solar incentives below.

#3. Offset your carbon footprint

Renewable energy is good for the environment: it emits no carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming. You can’t say the same for fossil fuels. Solar energy is also great for offsetting your carbon footprint.  The state of Connecticut cares about their carbon footprint, which is why their renewable portfolio standard states utilities must provide 40% renewable energy by 2030. If you want to control your own renewable energy sources, and have the utility companies even buy solar energy from you, you’ll want your own solar system as soon as possible. If you’re curious how this works, read more about the net metering program below.

#4. Solar technology advancements

As with any other technology, the more it advances, the more affordable it becomes. The solar technology field has made huge progress over the last few decades making it more reliable, affordable, and more appealing than ever.

Solar battery storage is an example of this with options like the Enphase Encharge and Tesla Powerwall. Choosing a solar installer who only uses the latest technology with the most reputable brands will give you peace of mind in your investment. Plus, you can have your home’s power in your hands with advanced app monitoring technologies.

There are plenty of reasons to go solar in Connecticut, as well as some pretty generous solar incentives to make it easier to make the decision. These include the federal solar tax credit, state-wide net metering and property and sales tax exemptions.

In this section, we’ll go over all the financial incentives for going solar in the state of Connecticut, including:

Connecticut Net Metering Program

Net metering is a program which credits you back for the unused solar energy your solar panel system produces during the day. This means especially during peak hours your system may produce more energy than your home needs. Net metering means you can sell back that energy to your utility company in the form of credits to your monthly bill. In Connecticut, Eversource has one of the top net metering programs in the state.

Federal Solar Tax Credit

The best solar incentive is the Solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC) offered by the United States federal government.

The 26% tax credit applies as long as the home solar system is installed by December 31, 2022. Starting in 2023, the value of the tax credit will step down to 22%. After 2023, the tax credit for residential solar ends.

Property Tax Exemption for Connecticut Solar Panels

You may be aware that additions to your home can result in an increase of property taxes. The good news for Connecticut residents is that solar panels are completely property tax exempt. That means all the value without having to pay additional property taxes for the solar panels installed on your home. This means 100% of the assessed value of the solar system is exempt from the homeowner’s property taxes.

State Sales Tax Exemption

And speaking of taxes, don’t worry about that extra 6.25% in Connecticut sales tax. That’s right, solar energy equipment is completely sales tax exempt. Not only does it cover solar panels, it also covers installation. Just another reason to go solar in Connecticut.

Solar Panels and the Value of Your Home

home with solar panelsNot only do solar panels save you money, they also add value to your home.

According to a comprehensive report done by the US Department of Energy and National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), they concluded the impact of solar panels on residential property values was positive. On average, solar panels add $20 of value for every $1 you save on your electric bill. So if you saved $200 a month on your electric bill with solar panels, you’d have an additional $4,000 of value added to your home.

This was backed up again in 2015 when the Department of Energy and Berkeley Laboratory sought to determine if solar-enabled homes performed better in the real estate market. After analyzing 22,000 homes, they found that homes with solar panels fetched a higher asking price than those without. About $4/watt, which comes out to be around $15,000 for residential, depending on your home and solar system.

In addition, solar panels can help your property spend less time on the market. In another study done by NREL, they found that solar properties earned about 17% more at closing, in addition to selling 20% faster.
