Are Solar Panels Worth It in Texas?
There are several reasons why going solar in Texas is worth it. Here are just a few of the main reasons people are switching to clean solar energy in your state.
Lots of sunshine ready to be used for energy.
In Texas, there is an average of 205 sunny days. If you’ve been frustrated with your electric bill or have been curious about the benefits of clean renewable energy, it’s time to turn that sunshine into savings with solar panels.
Decreased solar panel cost and improved technology.
The price of solar panels has decreased dramatically, along with an increase in solar panel efficiency. According to the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), prices have fallen 38% over the last 5 years. That means now is better than ever for Dallas residents to switch to clean solar energy for their home.
Don’t miss out on the explosion of solar throughout Texas.
All your neighbors have solar, why don’t you? According to SEIA, Texas ranks #2 in the nation for solar power, with over 75,000 installations and enough solar power installed in the state to power 642,199 homes.

2022 Texas Solar Incentives, Tax Credits, & Rebates
Residents across the state of Texas have access to a number of solar incentives and programs that can help reduce the cost of installing their solar panel systems by thousands of dollars. These incentives include a federal tax credit, solar panel rebates, energy bill credits, and even a home value increase. To read more about solar incentives offered by local cities, check out our guide to Texas solar incentives.
Reading about available solar incentives will give you some insight into how much to expect in terms of savings. However, to get a personalized answer, we recommend speaking with one of our solar specialists. They can discuss the benefits of taking advantage of these amazing solar incentives with you. They will let you know the installation cost, and discuss financial benefits, incentives, or rebates that will offset the initial cost of your solar energy system.
Solar incentives for going solar in the state of Texas include:
- Federal Solar Tax Credit
- Solar Rebate Programs
- Net metering
- Renewable Energy Systems Property Tax Exemption
- Solar Rights Law
30% Federal Solar Tax Credit (ITC)
In August of 2022, the federal government approved a 30% solar tax credit (ITC) for those who want to purchase and install solar panels. The ITC allows you to potentially claim 30% of the total cost of your solar energy system, including labor and equipment, as a federal tax credit. This tax credit includes solar batteries as well. And if you don’t use all the tax credits the first year, they roll over to the next tax year.
To put this tax credit into perspective, suppose you’ve purchased a solar PV system for $18,000. You would then receive $5,400 in tax credits, which is 30% of the total cost. Now your total cost is $12,600. That’s nearly a third of the total cost of your installation. Even including a battery if you install one.
Texas Solar Energy Rebate Programs
Texas doesn’t currently offer a statewide solar rebate program. However, many large and small utility companies extend rebate programs to their customers to promote the switch to solar. Depending on the area you live in, your local electric utility company may have a special rebate for you.
CPS Energy, for example, has a special solar panel rebate for customers. If you qualify for this rebate, you could get up to $0.60 back for each watt of your solar panels. And if you use locally manufactured modules and inverters, you can get up to $0.70 back!
Denton Municipal Electric (DME) also offers a solar rebate for Denton, Texas homeowners.
Net Metering In Texas
In Texas, homeowners with solar panels may receive credits for their extra solar power provided their utility company offers a net metering policy. Net metering allows you to receive credit towards your utility bill when your solar energy system produces more power than your home consumes. While there is no statewide policy on net metering at the moment, some local utility companies do offer net metering.
Check out some of the utility net metering programs available in Texas:
- CPS Energy
- El Paso Electric Company
- Green Mountain Energy
Solar Panels Increase Home Value in Texas
Homeowners who install a solar panel system in their home can not only save money on energy bills but can see an increase in their home’s value too. In fact, according to the Appraisal Journal, solar panels can increase your home’s value by $20 for every $1 saved in annual utility bills. For example, if your home solar energy system saves you $200 a year, you will see a $4,000 increase in your home’s value. A home value increase is exciting, but if you’re worried about how a home value increase may also increase your property taxes, then be sure to keep reading.
Property Tax Exemption for Renewable Energy Systems
According to the Texas property tax code, you may exempt 100% of the appraised property value that arises from the installation of a solar energy system in your home. That means that although your home value increased from the addition of a solar panel system, you will not see an increase in your property tax bill.
For example, let’s say your property is valued and taxed at $100,000. Then you install a solar panel system that adds $15,000 to the property value. The exemption applies to the added value that arose from the solar panel system. So with the exemption, you will only be taxed on the property value of $100,000. That means in Texas, solar panels will give your home extra value for no extra cost.Free Solar Quote
Texas Solar Access Rights Law
If you’re a homeowner with a homeowner’s association (HOA), you may be worried you may face some resistance from your HOA about installing a solar energy system. Thankfully, Texas lawmakers acted to protect property owner’s rights with House Bill 362. HB362 enacts a solar access rights law for Texas residents, which prohibits property owner associations from denying property owners the right to install solar panels.
This means if you wish to install a solar energy system on your property, your HOA cannot deny you that right. While they cannot deny you a solar panel system, your request to install solar panels must follow your HOA’s home improvement guidelines. Luckily our solar specialists are experts when it comes to dealing with HOA’s and can conveniently complete all necessary paperwork.Start Saving Today

How to choose the best solar companies in Texas?
Choosing the right solar company in Texas can be overwhelming, but we’ve put together a few tips to help you understand what to look for in a solar company.
Here are the three most important things when choosing a solar panel company.
- Make sure the company you’re choosing has warranties in place. Not only on the labor but products as well. That way you know you and your investment are protected in the years to come.
- Read reviews about the company you’re choosing. While you’ll see a bad review here and there (just the nature of open reviews), make sure a large majority of the reviews aren’t negative and stating the same problems over and over. That’s a clear indicator of a company to stay clear of, no matter how well known their name is.
- Choose a reputable company that’s been in the game for a while. Again, this way you are sure to protect your investment with a company that will continue to be there for you in the years to come.
